We begin our planning for our 2022 season feeling excited and proud at how our Redbacks community has managed the challenges this year. We have a lot to celebrate and a lot to work on, but our future looks very bright.
This year we have been looking at ways that we can create more gender diversity and inclusion at our great club. We’d like to start by seeing more women (15 years +) taking up coaching, assistant coaching, and referee roles across all of our programs. At the moment, we have around 8% of female coaches across both boys/girls’ programs and at a State level, women represent around 10% of coaching roles. Football Victoria are also very focused on increasing this number and they are working with us to share ideas and insights.
We celebrate the significant contribution that women are making to our club through Committee roles, as Team Managers, Coaches, Assistant Coaches and running our Canteen and we want to increase the number of roles for women of all ages within playing groups as well. Together, all our volunteers create wonderful experiences for our players and together we can build a club that will continue to welcome generations of Redbacks into our great game.
We are excited to have secured a grant from Nillumbik Shire Council to pursue our vision for greater diversity and we have created our ‘Coaches for Community’ program to move these ideas into action. We are kicking off with a survey to all our members where we can gather feedback from you on the ways we can build more diversity and inclusive practices, together. We’d also love members to join us for afternoon tea to share more insights and experiences through small focus groups, once restrictions ease. You will see a survey link below so please take a few minutes to complete it because this just doesn’t work without you.
We want to continue to build an inclusive and diverse club that reflects our community to create a sustainable future. We are stepping forward knowing it’s not an overnight fix and that it’s a broader issue than gender and we are supported by Council and Football Victoria to get there. We need help from you, our community, and our members, to build the right pathways for everyone to find their futures in our Redbacks football.
